Early Inspirations

In 2008, Art21 conducted an interview with Kimsooja, which offers insight into her upbringing, early art years, and artistic creations. I thought it was interesting to learn about

Kimsooja's earliest forms of artistic inspiration and what drove her to become an artist.

In the interview with Art21, Kimsooja explains that her earliest memory of considering herself an artist was in middle school when she was around the age of 13 years old. This surprised me because although many kids around this age may consider themselves creative or artistic, I can't imagine that many would define themselves as an artist. She also explains that around this time, she had aspirations to become a philosopher, before she truly even knew what a philosopher was.

Moving on to later education years, Kimsooja also talks about her main inspirations while pursuing a Western Paintings Degree at art school. A couple of artists that she mentions include Cezanne and John Cage. More specifically, she talks about John Cage's work, "Paris Biennale," which she was particularly touched by.

In conclusion, Kimsooja felt the inspiration of an artist from a very young age. It seems as though her confidence in herself as an artist was set early on, which is critical for success. Additionally, a couple of artists were inspirations for Kimsooja's work throughout her art school years. It was interesting to learn about the inspirations and history associated with Kimsooja's work.
