History of Art: Kimsooja

Kimsooja, a 65-year-old artist who grew up in South Korea, has created a wide variety of inspiring artwork in the fields of video, sculpture, and installation work. After graduating from Hongik University located in Seoul, South Korea, in 1984 with a master's degree in fine arts, Kimsooja went on to create a variety of very impressive works. A few of her early works, such as The Earth and the Heaven (1984) and Untitled (1984) used sewn clothing in the form of sculptures. The idea of these pieces was to take an everyday object and turn it into something eye catching and artistically amazing. More recently, Kimsooja has completed full-room installation pieces, such as "To Breathe" (2006, pictured). In this work, she used a combination of windows covered with film and mirrored floors to create a breathtaking rainbow lighting effect that shines throughout the entire room. Kimsooja's impressive larger-than-life installations are what initially inspired me to research and write about her. I would love to learn more about how Kimsooja creates these full room installations. I am also interested in learning more about what her biggest inspirations are, the thought process that goes into her work, her favorite techniques, and so much more.
