In Graphic Design, we were asked to read a given article about choosing a successful typeface and respond with our takeaways. Some important things to consider when choosing your font, as described in the article, include:
Determine your goal
Consider legibility and readability
Consider appropriateness
One thing that stood out to me is the different definitions of legibility and readability. I thought that these terms meant the same thing, so it was interesting to hear and see the differences.
Legibility deals with the complexity of the typeface and is represented by the following image:
Readability deals with style choices, such as font color, and is represented by the following image:
Another topic that the article speaks about is text hierarchy. It is important to consider how many versions of your font you will need to include throughout all of your titles, subtitles, headings, and other text. If you cannot create enough versions of your text with variating factors such as italics, bold, and sizing, then it may be important to consider including an additional typeface.
