Interactive Installation

In my previous blogs, I have done research on Kimsooja, a 66-year-old artist from South Korea. Throughout her career, she has created a wide variety of impressive work using many different techniques and forms of media. Some techniques that she utilizes are sewing, immersive installations, and working with light.

In a recent piece, titled "Weaving the Light," Kimsooja created a large-scale fully immersive installation using light and reflections. In interviews, she describes her techniques of light weaving similar to sewing with a needle and thread.

This installation is located in Copenhagen's Cisternerne, which is known for its yearly art installations. Kimsooja's work in the Cisternerne is unique because it fully lights up an otherwise dark place. Additionally, since the installation is in such a unique place, it gives the viewer a one of a kind experience. It is said that viewers feel as though they are completely disconnected from the world - in another dimension. The complete immersion into the work makes viewers hyperaware of their own senses without distractions.

Another unique characteristic of the location of this piece is that there is water on the floors, meaning that the colorful lights shining down are reflected back up from the floors. This creates a unique experience for the viewer, as it is very visually stimulating to see how the lights and reflections bend as you move around the space.

I chose to talk about this work because of my own previous knowledge of Kimsooja. I researched her in the past, but haven't stayed up to date with her latest pieces until now. I really appreciate the uniqueness of the idea of weaving light, as it isn't something I've seen other artists do. Additionally, I think that the location of the installation sets it apart from other pieces - especially with the idea of bringing a lot of light into an otherwise dark and hidden place. Overall, I think that this work is extremely creative and would be very cool to see in person.
