Kimsooja's "A Needle Woman"

One of Kimsooja's many styles and types of artworks includes video and performance work. I explored her many works on her website. Out of all of her works that I viewed, "A Needle Woman" stood out to me the most. You can find this work as well as other performance artwork on Kimsoojas site, at kimsooja.com | videos.

"A Needle Woman", created in 2009, features a crowd of people surrounding a single stationary woman in the center of the screen. The people surrounding the woman are all walking in various directions, creating a chaotic feel. The people continue to walk around the central subject individual for 25 seconds, and then the video loops.

The message that this video portrays can be perceived in many different ways. My interpretation of this video is similar to the common saying "a needle in a haystack." This could be a reason for the title, "A Needle Woman." The stationary individual is meant to show the humble simplicity of one’s life in a fast-paced world. I specifically liked this video the most because of its simplicity combined with such a strong message. The video was easily interpretable for me, but I still found it extremely visually interesting to watch.
