Kimsooja, an artist from South Korea has been steadily creating impressive artwork and releasing new projects since the early 1980s. My first blog talked in more depth about Kimsooja’s personal, education, and career history. As mentioned previously, she typically creates video, sculpture, painting, and installation pieces. One thing that I noticed about Kimsooja’s work is that her style and types of work have stayed very consistent over the years. However, I noticed that there has been a considerable increase in the creation of installation pieces lately. Looking back to 2021, most of Kimsooja’s recent works, such as “To Breathe” (below), “The Middle Land,” and “Breaking the Monument” (above), were all installation pieces. Although many of her works are multimedia and also utilize film or painting, this noticeable trend of installation pieces stood out to me and makes me wonder what is yet to come in 2022. As someone who has been researching this artist, I am very excited to see if her recent trend of installation work will continue, or if she will choose a new focus. Although no pieces have yet been released this year, my prediction is that she will continue to focus on installations while incorporating other design elements, such as painting, film, and sculptures.
